Though I know it’s closer to afternoon, I thought I would share this with you. Most, if not all, of you will have heard of the Nobel Prize, though I think maybe fewer people will have heard of the Ig Nobel Prize.
This is awarded to research that first makes you laugh, then makes you think; and since the 23rd annual award ceremony took place on the 12th September, I thought it would use some things from that as you weekly cheer-up.
Prize in biology
“Discovering that when dung beetles get lost they can navigate their way home by looking at the milky way.”
Prize in probability
Two related discoveries:
“The longer a cow is lying down, the more likely it is to stand up” and “Once a cow stands up, you cannot easily predict when it will next lie down.”
Prize in physics:
“Some people would be physically capable of running across the surface of a pond — if those people and that pond were on the moon.”
Prize in chemistry:
“The biochemical process by which onions make people cry is even more complicated than scientists previously realized.”
and the Ig Nobel Peach prize goes to…
“Alexander Lukashenko, president of Belarus, for making it illegal to applaud in public, AND to the Belarus State Police, for arresting a one-armed man for breaking that law”
President Lukashenko did not attend the ceremony. What a shame.
Keep smiling guys!
EDIT: Also, the only recipient of both an Ig Nobel prize and a Nobel prize is Andre Geim. His Nobel prize was for discovering graphene and the Ig prize for discovering that you can magnetically levitate a frog!
