A summary of why you should ALWAYS check your facts…and pretty much never trust a Tabloid

I posted this very brief statement on Facebook today and I’d like a copy of it on here…

A summary of why you should ALWAYS check your facts…and pretty much never trust a Tabloid…in fact, this is about as much evidence as you should need to never buy/trust/allow someone else to buy a tabloid paper.

How a tabloid reports: “AROUND 150,000 eastern European migrants are putting just £1 a week into Britain’s tax coffers.” [Daily Express]

How a real newspaper reports: “Pollard…was the main author of the study. According to the Labour Force Survey from the Office of National Statistics [this is the study Daily Express are basing their claim off], around 23% of eastern European employees in the UK earn less than £221 a week. Mr Pollard explained that his assumption is that people at this level of income are unlikely to be paying more than £1 a week in net tax because they would either be below the personal earnings allowance or eligible for tax credits on account of their low wage. With 800,000 eastern European employees in the UK, Mr Pollard said it was fair to estimate 150,000 of them would be paying no more than £1 a week in net income tax if tax credits are taken into account.” [The Guardian]

The Guardian is my personal recommendation to anyone wanting well reported news which is researched and written by people determined to find the truth…not to promote hatred of immigration.

I hate to be cliché, but the truth will set you free.
